In this brilliantly stylised romantic drama, Jeanne Moreau plays Jackie, a delectable seasoned veteran gambler. At a casino in the picturesque Nice, Jackie meets Jean, a novice gambler who used to be a bank clerk. Their story is that of seduction, obsession and… gambling. Michel Legrand’s lilting score is the non-speaking voice that narrates the many contrasts inherent in love: realistic and fantastical, romantic and brutal, joyous and cynical. Jean Rabier’s breathtaking cinematography captures the lush gambling scene, the sunny Riviera and the magnificent Moreau. As Jackie, she is vain and self-aware. But beneath her insolence, there is also a vulnerable side to Jackie, as anyone who truly loves does.
