For many cineastes, the most beautiful love story involves the city Paris and Jules, Jim and Catherine. In the 1910s Paris, they are a carefree threesome living the life of dreams. While the two men both fall in love with Catherine, it is Jules who marries the girl. When Jim visits his friends in Austria years later, the marriage has disintegrated. Jules would do anything to make Catherine happy, including sharing her with Jim. The question is: could they ever duplicate the freedom of their early days in Paris? Although her name is missing in the title, “Jules and Jim” is ultimately Catherine’s film. Beautiful, sexy and intellectual, she is however equally arrogant, unpredictable and selfish. Jeanne Moreau captures Catherine’s complexity to perfection with her dazzling performance.
