The jury is still out debating whether Louis Malle’s feature debut “Elevator to the Gallows” is considered a predecessor or an early example of the New Wave movement. As of the film being a tightly structured crime thriller with brilliant cinematography (by Henri Decae), wonderful score (by Miles Davis) and magnificent acting, the verdict is unanimously positive. Jeanne Moreau plays Florence who, together with her lover Julien, plots the murder of her husband. One step in the perfect murder plan goes wrong and Julien finds himself trapped in an elevator. Meanwhile, Florence waits in the café where they are supposed to meet for a rendezvous. When she is convinced that she has been deserted, she wanders through the streets of Paris, visiting all their usual haunts and perhaps hoping to find her lover nevertheless...
