《中國默片時代巨星阮玲玉的經典作品，拍攝於1931年的《戀愛與義務》根據華羅琛同名小說改編，有夫之婦不顧家人的反對與自己心愛的人私奔，可惜現實總是殘酷的，最終導致悲劇收場。愛情與麵包是電影中循環不斷的老話題，這部老電影曾在三十年代引起熱話，之後一度被認為佚失，時隔83年後重見天日，不但紀錄了老中國風華，還是阮玲玉一生所演出的30部電影之中九部得以傳世的作品之一。2013年由台灣國家電影資料館2K高畫質修復版。

Newly restored in 2013 by the Chinese Taipei FIlm Archive, this silent B&W classic from Shanghai’s Golden Age stars two of the era’s greatest screen icons, Ruan Lingyu and Jin Yan. Raised in a strict family, Yang Naifang falls in love with college student Li Zuyi, but she yields to her parents’ marital arrangement. Several years later, she encounters Zuyi again and their feelings are reawakened. Already the mother of two children, Naifang chooses to escape her marriage for true love, but a harsh reality awaits her. Brilliantly essaying Naifang from youth to old age, Ruan spells out the tragic fate of women who break from tradition in a conservative society.
