《靜靜的嘛呢石》透過記錄一對喇嘛父子平凡生活，由於現代生活的誘惑，很多喇嘛的生活不再艱苦，連小活佛也面臨巨大未知的改變。兩年後所拍的《草原》是一個良心和救贖的故事，放生牦牛向山神獻祭，祭品被偷上演一場捉賊記，村長為善心母親討回公度，積福竟變作孽。兩部短片紀錄西藏傳統民族如何面對現代化的快速變遷，萬馬才旦以接近自由的方式來講發生在他故鄉的真實故事，鏡頭下拍出一種難得的淡定和真實感，在國內外學院獲獎連連。

Both straightforward and subtly revealing, Pema Tseden’s first works provide early glimpses at the style and aesthetic of his future feature films. The mournful Grasslands concerns the theft of a yak that’s been “liberated” and allowed to roam free as a means of creating good karma. Elderly Ama Tsomo journeys in search of her stolen yak, delving into a crime against man, Buddhism and traditional Tibetan custom. Meanwhile, The Silent Manistone tells the deceptively charming tale of a young monk who visits his family over the New Year, only to become enchanted by a VCD television serial of The Journey to the West. Pema Tseden would later adapt The Silent Manistone into his first feature, The Silent Holy Stones.
