Wadjda is an 11-year-old girl whose only dream is to own the green bicycle she sees every day in the bicycle shop. When her mother – who is dealing with a crisis of her own as her husband considers taking a second wife – refuses to buy her the bicycle, Wadjda joins her school’s Qur’an recital competition for the cash prize. The first feature film made by a female Saudi director, and also the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, Haifaa al-Mansour’s Wadjda is a work of passion that was five years in the making, and a stirring and humanistic coming-of-age tale that recalls the best of Italian neorealism.
