In the second part of Haneke’s “Glaciation Trilogy”, we meet Benny, a 13-year-old boy who sees the world as one big video, sometimes starring himself. His bedroom resembles a TV production studio, with a videotape library, monitors, and cameras. His parents are mostly absent, and not particularly interested in their kid, until they discover that their quiet child has done something unspeakably violent, for no apparent reason. “Why did you do it?” they ask, and the boy just says because he wants to see “how it feels like”. There are many images of violence in Benny’s Video, but the most powerful and disturbing scenes are the quiet moments in between, like the long scene with Benny’s parents discussing how they can cover up their son’s actions.
