Among male directors, Kieslowski is most adept at capturing the female psyche, and this is one of the most superb feminine films of all time. Two women, Veronika and Veronique live in Poland and France, respectively. They don't know each other but they look identical and seem to have a hunch of the other's existence. Veronika, a vocal student, suddenly collapses and dies on her first performance. Veronique, a music teacher, begins to understand that she has a double life when she sees a photo of Veronika.

Premonition, intuition and fate are difficult to express through film language but Kieslowski did a great job with this film. He abandoned traditional cause-and-effect narrative structure and sensually pieced together all the small and seemingly unrelated details through the most poetic and beautiful images one can imagine. Kieslowski's artistic film style corresponds brilliantly with composer Preisner's unearthly music and Irène Jacob's stunning performance. The scene involving a ballerina puppet show is extremely moving and unforgettable.
