"Each one of the main characters in A Short Film About Killing lives alone and is, in fact, incapable of doing much."

A frail young boy murders a stocky taxi-driver. This takes seven minutes. The law murders the boy. This takes five minutes. Two acts of murder run in parallel in the film, and the director's indictment of violence -- no matter what are the reasons behind -- is crystal-clear. When the film was shown in Poland, a heated debate on capital punishment by chance was starting and the film found its place in the campaign. This film has the most stylistic images among all other Decalogues. The cinematographer Slawek Idziak specially made 600 greenish filters to cater for lens with different focal length. The world looks cruel, dull and empty through these lenses as if they are seen from the killer's eyes. In the prolonged scene of the death of the condemned boy, viewers are not spared any shocking details of the whole sequence of the execution. The precision and ruthlessness of a state-machine provokes audience's reflection. This is an extended cinema version of Decalogue 5.
