While most of the spotlight for THE ECLIPSE falls on Vittoria (played by director Antonioni's muse Monica Vitti), Delon never fails to steal the scene as the cold, seductive stockbroker Piero. The two meet at the Roman stock exchange and quickly they indulge themselves in irrepressible passion. But gradually Vittoria is driven away by Piero's materialism and she finds herself unable to commit to him. As with most of Antonioni's works, THE ECLIPSE is no conventional drama nor easily accessible, yet the film is compelling, stirring and haunting. It honestly and cruelly speaks out the truth about the modern world, and Piero is the symbol of a modern, sophisticated yet hollow Italian society. Winner of Special Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival.
