Widely considered one of the best films of Turkish cinema, Hope was Yilmaz Guney’s first film to garner international recognition, even while being censored at home. Guney himself stars as an indebted cart driver struggling to support his family. When his horse gets run over, he loses his sole means of livelihood. Desperate and impoverished, he first places his hope in the lottery, and then in a mythical buried treasure. A turning point in Guney’s revolutionary filmmaking career, the bleak black-and-white drama evokes Italian neorealism in its depiction of urban poverty and class injustice, but becomes increasingly absurdist as the protagonist is consumed by his quest for treasure.
