Children of the Pyre

Near the shores of the River Ganges in Northeast India lies Manikarnika, India's busiest, most sacred and ancient cremation ground, where 150 dead are consigned to salvation each day. Among the dead, seven children make their living, six snatching brightly colored shrouds from the deceased to resell, while one works tirelessly to keep the funeral pyres burning. Director Rajesh Jala followed his subjects for 18 months to craft this harrowing, unsettling and illuminating look at children in a place where life and death take on new meaning. Not for the squeamish.
