| These two documentaries, being
Kore-eda's earlier works, dwelled on the topic of education
and welfare. In HOWEVER...(48 min), the division chief
of the Social Welfare Bureau committed suicide while being
responsible for compensating victims of Minamata Disease,
a neurological disorder caused by methyl mercury poisoning.
As someone who dedicated himself to the cause of social
welfare, what drove him to this untimely end? LESSONS
FROM A CALF (47min) detailed Kore-eda's journey to an
elementary school in Nagano, where textbooks were cast
aside in favor of real educational experiences. Filmed
in the style of home movie, the director spent three years
in following the interactions between a calf and a class
of grade 3 school children. From the birth to the death
of the calf, the audience also witness the growth of the
school children, aside from pondering on the essence of
education. |
