第六代導演王超的作品不多，大多詮釋中國二三線城市深刻的社會現實。《幻想曲》描述一個發生在重慶尋常家庭的悲劇，臥病的父親令家人的命運遽變，但生活仍將繼續，是周而復始，還是從新開始？中國工人階級的現實困境根本沒有改變過，如何從個人的悲劇生存中超越出來，面對重慶的一切，又該如何正視自己的內心？由《江城夏日》到《幻想曲》，王超六年後把百姓的故事帶回康城。全片皆是來自川渝兩地的素人挑大樑演出。
Chinese director Wang Chao returned to Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section for a second time with this sublime realist drama. When factory worker Zhao is diagnosed with leukemia, his family falls into a slow decay as they struggle to raise the money for his treatment. Set in Chongqing, this indie drama makes use of the city’s cold industrial background for a refreshingly unsentimental and subtle approach to its melodramatic subject matter. But even as tragedy appears to be inevitable for the family, scenes like a family birthday celebration bring us glimmers of hope before the film reaches its devastating finale.
