After sweeping this year’s Japan Academy Prize with The Great Passage, maverick director Ishii Yuya delivers another breakthrough in Our Family, the most starkly serious film of his career. This incisive adaptation of Hayami Kazumasa’s novel succinctly charts a typical family’s meltdown when the mother, Reiko (Harada Mieko), is suddenly diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. Oldest son Kosuke (Tsumabuki Satoshi) is forced to take the reins as each family member deals with the shocking news in a different manner. More revelations follow as secrets and grievances spill out and the full extent of the financially strapped family’s burdens comes to light.
