根據韓子雲的《海上花列傳》而改編，經由兩大文人張愛玲譯 注、朱天文編劇，侯孝賢的《海上花》呈現19世紀末顛倒上海的 晚清妓女的兒女情感，以及生活各種畸形情態。梁朝偉、羽田美 智子、劉嘉玲、李嘉欣的風月傳奇和悲情姻緣，昔日似錦繁華的 歡場熱鬧，轉眼煙消雲散的浮華夢。侯導長期攝影搭檔《戲夢人 生》後一別五年再次合作，李屏賓的鏡頭表現絢爛大時代感，燈 紅酒綠、香鬢麗影、西裝旗袍、金錢愛情，蒼涼華麗地交織出醉 夢人生的幻眩世界。

Set in the opulent "flower house" brothels of 19th-century Shanghai, FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI requires great patience even by Hou Hsiao-hsien's standards of languid pacing, but the reward is equally great. The liaisons of the courtesans and callers fade in and out in a mesmerizing haze of long, luscious shots and luminous cinematography: Wang (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) lingers between longtime lover Crimson (Michiko Hada) and new interest Jasmin (Vicky Wei), Emerald (Michelle Reis) schemes to buy her freedom, Pearl (Carina Lau) tutors a willful young flower.
