Hou Hsiao-hsien and Mark Lee's collaboration began in 1985 with the beloved classic A TIME TO LIVE AND THE TIME TO DIE, a semi-autobiographical tale of the director's own coming-of-age experiences. As typical of Hou's films, the quiet family saga about growing up in postwar Taiwan is simple, slow and spare while exuding a plain elegance and devastating honesty. The matter-of-fact portrait of life and death takes the young hero through childhood memories of school, friendship and puppy love, as well as the acute pain of loss and suffering that come with age.
