No. 89 Shimen Road
After earning a master's degree in filmmaking from the United States, Shu Haolun
returned to China and started a career making independent films, all of
which have won international accolades. In the films of the Shanghai native,
whether documentary or dramatic, one can find a deep sense of nostalgia, in
particular about the bygone days of the 1980s. Shu's first dramatic feature
NO.89 SHIMEN ROAD tells a coming-of-age story about 16-year-old Xiaoli,
who is forced to grow up when his best friend Lanmi begins to drift away
from him as new opportunities come up for her.

Chaiman
Accompanying No. 89 SHIMEN ROAD is director Shu Haolun's Shanghai-set short CHAIMAN, an emblematic piece criticizing China's urbanization process. "Chai" is a word invented by the director, meaning "to demolish."
