Based on Jie Liu-Falin's banned autobiographical novel, Lou Ye's latest film brings the director to an entirely new environment: the gritty outskirts of Paris. Young teacher Hua (Corinne Yam) recently moved to France from Beijing. Alone in a foreign land, she falls into a sordid relationship with thuggish construction worker Matheiu (Tahar Rahim), who loves and abuses her with equal intensity. Lou strikes a searing balance of pain, desire and loneliness in LOVE AND BRUISES that transcends language and culture. |
