After the success of SEASON OF THE SUN, Nikkatsu adapts another controversial Shintaro Ishihara novel about the morally deprived lifestyle of rebellious youths (known as “taiyouzokus”) in post-war Japan. Yujiro Ishihara (Shintaro's brother) and Masahiko Tsugawa star as two brothers who fall in love with the same girl (Mie Kitahara) during one summer on an exotic beach. Now perceived as a must-see classic of the "taiyouzoku" film genre, CRAZED FRUITS was nevertheless critically savaged at the time and sparked the wrath of parents groups all over Japan. |
