To counter Toei's Pinky Violence film series, Nikkatsu decided to create their own pink film series, called the Nikkatsu Roman Porno. While the primary goal of these films was to titillate, the filmmakers were also given plenty of artistic freedom - as long as they fulfilled a minimum quota of nude scenes. As a result, director Tatsuro Kumashiro was able to tell the story of a former yakuza who returns to his hometown while also mocking Japan's censorship authority by applying scratches on the film as a form of protest/self-censorship. Named one of the best Japanese films of the 20th century by Kinema Junpo. |
