In 1963, director Seijun Suzuki was hired to make KANTO WANDERER, designed to be the low-budget second film of a double feature. The enfant terrible of the Nikkatsu Studio at the time, Suzuki instead deliberately made sure that his film looked nothing like the film that preceded it, and the result is an ultra-stylish, genre-breaking yakuza film unlike anything else within the genre. For this story of yakuza members and their unwavering loyalty to the traditional yakuza code, Suzuki and production designer Takeo Kimura eschewed reality with a stage set designed to visually depict his characters' troubled inner states. |
