菲臘花了兩個月薪金買下八米厘攝影機，本想紀錄剛出生女兒的成長，但廠長卻要求他為單位服務，拍攝聯歡晚會；誤打誤撞下，居然給他在電影節裡撈了個三獎。他登時雄心萬丈立志成為紀錄片大師，冷落嬌妻也在所不計。但鏡頭下的真實卻不是人人吃得消。當人民英雄的代價是好同事成了活靶，最後菲臘要在成名與道義之間作取捨。忙爸爸學會珍惜家庭已成近年荷李活電影的濫調，奇斯洛夫斯基高明之處是善於反映事情的正反面，他的世界沒有好人壞人只是各懷苦衷，所以他的喜劇從不會硬滑稽，反而處處流露人性的溫馨。
Filip buys an 8mm camera to record the first years of his baby daughter, but his factory bosses decide that it is best used to serve the people, and request that he films various work unit functions. Absurdly, the film wins an award at an amateur film festival, and Filip becomes more and more ambitious: he wants to become a documentary filmmaker, and to tell the truth with his camera. But truth is not something everyone can handle, and when his new film lands a fellow worker in trouble, Filip is forced to choose between fame and doing the right thing. The theme of a career obsessed father learning to value his family has become somewhat of a Hollywood cliché in recent years, but Kieslowski is too nuanced a filmmaker to let this become a trite morality tale. He infuses every character with such charm and humanity that this film well stands the test of time.
