法國國旗上藍白紅三色，象徵著永恆人類追求：自由、平等、博愛。「顏色三部曲」之首《藍》，探討的是個人生命的自由，但也是對生命無常的一闕輓歌。茱莉亞庇洛仙飾演的少婦茱麗葉，因作曲家丈夫和女兒在車禍中雙雙身亡而陷入極度痛苦之中。自此，丈夫為歐洲統一所寫的旋律，不斷在腦海裡縈繞著，直至發現丈夫原來早有外遇時，她才能從心靈的桎梏解脫出來。庇洛仙的演出令人驚艷，自不待言。剎那間的全黑畫面，淒美深邃的音樂切入，成了一再重複的母題，藍調影像營造出沉痛的哀傷感，亦絲毫不落俗套。雖然「顏色三部曲」被評為奇斯洛夫斯基最「隨俗」之作，但他對影像和配樂的堅執，卻一如以往。

Blue is the first part of Kieslowski's trilogy on France's national motto: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Blue stands for liberty, namely freedom of an individual. Julie loses her husband, an acclaimed European composer and her young daughter in a car accident at the very opening of the film. She attempts to start life anew without any personal commitments, but when a surprising secret concerning her husband is revealed, she feels that she can finally be freed from the past. Juliette Binoche plays the lead character splendidly. Periodically fading out to black and Preisner's breath-taking score help sustain the film's melancholic mood. Although Three Colours was criticized for being too commercial, there is no doubt that Kieslowski is striving for perfect combination of images and music reaches its zenith in this trilogy.
