Kieslowski started his career making documentaries, and uses an almost uncanny power of observation to capture the intimate details of everyday life in an objective and unsentimental manner. From the City of Lodz (1970/18') is a personal portrait of a decaying city and its worn-out people. I Was a Soldier (1971/16') interviews soldiers who have lost their sight in the war, who can only see in their dreams now. The women in Seven Women of Different Ages (1979/16') are students, instructors and professional dancers. What they have in common is a passion and commitment to ballet. X-Ray (1975/13') portrays life in a tuberculosis sanitarium. Talking Heads (1980/16') interviews people of different ages to find out what is most important in their lives. In Railway Station (1980/14') some people are anxiously waiting for trains, some are just wandering about, while others still are taking a nap. All are under ever-present gaze of closed circuit cameras.
